A 1972 MG B GT with a very familiar name attached went under the hammer — and it certainly caught people’s attention.
This particular car was the last one driven by Richard Hammond on Top Gear, later featuring in The Smallest Cog, and was offered at the Iconic Auctioneers sale at Race Retro in 2026.
Watch how the bidding played out below:
With provenance like that, there was always going to be interest — especially with Hammond himself in attendance on the day.
More than just a name
Beyond the TV connection, this wasn’t just a standard MG B GT.
It featured a Ric Wood Motorsport-built engine and was ready to go for historic motorsport use — something that adds real appeal for the right buyer.
That combination of usability and backstory made it a bit different to your typical example.
Strong interest, but a measured result
Guided at £15,000–£20,000, expectations were fairly clear going in.
The bidding was solid, but it didn’t run away. Instead, it settled around the lower end of the estimate — a result that feels about right given the mix of factors at play.
