Why Didn’t This Citroën 2CV Dolly Sell at Auction?

A Citroën 2CV Dolly went under the hammer at Cheffins — but this time, it didn’t quite find a buyer.
We spotted this one ahead of the sale, and while it had plenty of appeal on paper, the result tells a slightly different story.
A charming classic with a twist
Offered from the estate of its sole owner from new, this late-model 2CV6 Dolly came with strong provenance and the desirable 602cc engine.
On the face of it, that’s exactly the sort of thing that usually draws interest.
But there was more to it.
The catalogue made it clear this wasn’t a straightforward example — with a period of storage, evidence of rodent damage, and the need for interior work and recommissioning.
Guide price vs bidding
Guided at £3,000–£5,000, this looked like an accessible entry point into classic ownership.
Bidding did get underway — but it never quite reached where it needed to be.
The highest bid stopped at £2,200, and the car was left unsold on the day.
As is often the case with auction entries, that doesn’t necessarily mean it didn’t find a buyer afterwards — many deals are agreed post-sale once the room has cleared.

A sign of a more selective market?
Results like this are just as telling as the headline-grabbing sales.
While demand for usable classics remains strong, projects are a different story — especially when the work required is clearly laid out.
Buyers are still out there, but they’re becoming more selective about what they take on.
What do you think?
At £2,200, was this close to being a deal… or was it right to fall short?
