A 1973 Ford Cortina 1600L went under the hammer at Anglia Car Auctions — and it’s fair to say the result caught a few people off guard.

At first glance, this looked like a fairly straightforward lot. Bidding opened around the £7,500 mark — a level that would normally sit comfortably within expectations for a usable classic Cortina.
But it didn’t stop there.
Strong bidding from the start
From the moment the auctioneer got going, it was clear there was proper interest in the room. The bidding didn’t hang about — and more importantly, it didn’t stall either.
That’s usually the key sign.
When a car pauses early, it often means it’s found its level. When it keeps moving, it means at least two buyers really want it — and that’s when prices can creep past where most people expect them to land.
That’s exactly what happened here.
So what is a Ford Cortina actually worth?
Values for classic Cortinas have been steadily strengthening in recent years, driven by nostalgia and a growing appreciation for everyday British classics.
While Escorts and Capris often grab the headlines, cars like the Cortina are starting to follow — especially honest, usable examples.
Condition, originality and presentation still make a huge difference, but results like this show that demand is there when the right car comes up.
