How Is The Vauxhall VX220 25 Years Old? This One Is For Sale At ACA

Some cars make you feel old. The Vauxhall VX220 is definitely one of them.

It still looks modern enough to have been launched only a few years ago, yet the car pictured here was registered in 2001 and is now coming up for sale at Anglia Car Auctions at the grand old age of 25.

Yes. Twenty-five.

This Europa Blue VX220 is entered into ACA’s new Marketplace Modern Classics auction on Saturday 26th September 2026, with a guide price of £9,000 to £11,000.

And that guide certainly caught our attention.

The VX220 Still Doesn’t Look 25 Years Old

Vauxhall launched the VX220 in 2000, and it was anything but a conventional Vauxhall sports car.

Developed alongside the second-generation Lotus Elise, it used a bonded aluminium chassis, mid-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. The similarities with the Elise were obvious, but the VX220 had its own bodywork, dimensions, engines and character.

The original naturally aspirated version used a 2,198cc four-cylinder engine producing 145bhp.

With the car weighing only around 875kg, that was enough for 0-60mph in approximately 5.6 seconds.

It was tiny, low and deliberately basic.

Look inside this example and there’s very little attempt to disguise what it is. There’s exposed aluminium, enormous sills, a compact cabin and very little unnecessary trim.

Even now, it looks like something far more exotic than most people would expect to find wearing a Vauxhall badge.

It Wasn’t Cheap When New

The naturally aspirated VX220 cost £22,995 when new in 2000.

That makes ACA’s £9,000 to £11,000 guide for this example particularly interesting.

Of course, simply comparing a 2000 list price with a 2026 auction estimate doesn’t tell the whole story. Twenty-five years of depreciation, condition, mileage, history and changing demand all have an effect.

But the VX220 has had an interesting journey through the market.

For years it seemed to sit slightly in the shadow of the Lotus Elise with which it shared so much of its basic concept.

Values eventually reached a low point before beginning to strengthen again as the cars became scarcer and enthusiasts increasingly recognised what they were.

Classic & Sports Car was already describing the VX220 as having reached full classic status back in 2019.

What Are Vauxhall VX220s Worth Now?

There isn’t one simple answer to what a Vauxhall VX220 is worth.

Specification, mileage, originality, history and condition can make a substantial difference, while the later Turbo and rare VXR220 occupy a different part of the market to the naturally aspirated 2.2-litre car.

Recent public auction results show just how much variation there can be.

The Classic Valuer currently records a median sold price of £13,557 across VX220 auction sales since 2020, although that figure includes different versions and specifications.

Among naturally aspirated examples, a 2001 VX220 sold for £11,350 in April 2025, while a 2002 example sold for £9,000 in March 2026.

So a £9,000 to £11,000 guide for this 65,000-mile example isn’t completely out of step with the market.

But it does look tempting enough to make us pay attention.

The 2001 VX220 For Sale At ACA

The car coming up at Anglia Car Auctions is a naturally aspirated 2.2-litre VX220 finished in Europa Blue with a black leather interior.

It has the five-speed manual gearbox and a recorded mileage of 65,727.

ACA says the car has spent most of the past ten years off the road and has covered only around 1,000 miles since 2016.

It has recently returned to use and passed its latest MOT without advisories. The certificate runs until 26th August 2027.

The original service book contains nine stamps, covering servicing from 2002 to 2008, followed by entries in 2012 and 2026.

Its history file also includes MOT certificates, receipts, the V5C, book pack and a spare key. The last owner has been registered since 2019.

ACA has given the car an estimate of £9,000 to £11,000.

It is being sold as part of the first ACA Marketplace Modern Classics auction at King’s Lynn on Saturday 26th September 2026.

You can also view the full listing, photographs and auction details for this particular VX220 on the Anglia Car Auctions website.

As with any auction car, potential bidders should inspect the vehicle and satisfy themselves as to its condition before bidding.

They’re Scarcer Than They Once Were

The VX220 was never a mass-produced sports car.

A total of 5,267 naturally aspirated cars and 1,940 Turbos were built during the model’s production run from 2000 to 2005.

That relative scarcity is surely becoming a bigger part of the appeal.

Twenty-five years ago, the VX220 was the strange new Vauxhall that shared its basic engineering philosophy with a Lotus.

Today, seeing one on the road is unusual enough to make you look twice.

Is The VX220 Already A Classic?

We’d say the argument about whether the VX220 might one day become a classic has largely passed.

It already is one.

The combination of its bonded aluminium construction, mid-engined layout, low production numbers, distinctive styling and serious driving ability makes it difficult to dismiss as simply an old Vauxhall.

Perhaps the bigger surprise is just how quickly we’ve arrived here.

A car launched in 2000 is now 25 years old.

That really doesn’t seem possible.

And with this Europa Blue example carrying a £9,000 to £11,000 guide at ACA, we’ll be very interested to see where the bidding ends up on 26th September.
