If you’ve ever fancied browsing a catalogue containing everything from a road-legal Le Mans racer to a Porsche tractor, this latest Car & Classic sale might be worth a look.
Car & Classic’s specialist ‘For the Love of Porsche’ auction is currently underway and brings together 24 Porsche-related lots spanning more than seven decades of the marque’s history. Whether your tastes lean towards early air-cooled classics, modern performance cars, competition machinery or unusual memorabilia, there’s plenty here to keep Porsche enthusiasts occupied.
Created in partnership with Porsche specialists Boxengasse, the sale covers everything from highly collectible road cars to genuine competition machinery, alongside one or two surprises.
The undisputed star of the catalogue has to be the 1988 Porsche Kremer 962.
This genuine Group C endurance racer boasts serious pedigree, having been campaigned by names including Mario Andretti and Derek Bell during its racing career. Remarkably, it’s also road registered in the UK, making it an exceptionally unusual opportunity to own one of Porsche’s most recognisable endurance racers in a form that could legally be driven on the road.
It’s difficult to imagine many auction catalogues featuring a car quite like it.
Among the road cars, one model immediately caught our attention.
The 2003 Porsche 911 (996) GT2 is one of just 129 right-hand-drive examples officially supplied to the UK. Powered by Porsche’s legendary twin-turbocharged Mezger engine and famously lacking modern electronic driving aids such as traction and stability control, the 996 GT2 has earned a reputation as one of the most uncompromising 911s of its era.
With fewer than 40,000 miles recorded and extensive history accompanying the car, it’s easy to understand why enthusiasts continue to rate these highly.
Not every Porsche in the sale is destined for smooth tarmac.
One of the more eye-catching entries is a 1978 Porsche 924 Safari, rebuilt in full Safari rally specification and finished in distinctive Martini Racing-inspired livery. It’s certainly one of the more unusual interpretations of the transaxle Porsche and demonstrates just how varied the catalogue has become.
At the opposite end of Porsche history sits a beautifully prepared 1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Speedster Emory Outlaw. Developed by renowned Outlaw specialists Rod and Gary Emory, it combines early Porsche styling with competition influences and documented racing history, making it one of the sale’s most significant historic entries.
One of the more unexpected entries is a genuine 1959 Porsche 108 tractor.
Long before Porsche became synonymous with sports cars, the company also produced tractors, and examples rarely appear alongside some of the world’s most desirable performance cars. It provides a fascinating reminder of the marque’s wider engineering history.
The catalogue also includes a unique piece of Porsche memorabilia in the form of a genuine Porsche 911 SC bonnet signed by Le Mans winner Richard Attwood. The bonnet has been transformed into display wall art, with proceeds from its sale supporting the Hope for Tomorrow charity.
While the Kremer 962 naturally dominates the headlines, we’d probably find ourselves lingering over the 996 GT2.
Cars like the Kremer are almost museum pieces, whereas the GT2 still represents the sort of Porsche many enthusiasts dream of actually owning and driving. It’s a fascinating snapshot of a period before electronic driver aids became commonplace, and examples with this sort of provenance don’t appear every day.
The ‘For the Love of Porsche’ sale is scheduled to conclude on Saturday 8 August, so anyone tempted won’t have long to study the catalogue.
Even if you’re not in the market for a Porsche, it’s the sort of auction that’s well worth browsing simply to appreciate the breadth of machinery on offer. From a Le Mans legend and an iconic GT2 to a Safari-inspired 924 and even a Porsche tractor, it offers a fascinating cross-section of one of the world’s most celebrated automotive marques.
