Peugeot 205 GTI Auction Result: A Hot Hatch Favourite Goes Under the Hammer

1991 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 in Sorrento Green at Anglia Car Auctions

Few hot hatches inspire quite the same affection as the Peugeot 205 GTI. More than three decades after production ended, it remains one of the defining performance cars of its generation, with a following that shows little sign of fading.

So when a particularly attractive 1991 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 appeared at Anglia Car Auctions in August 2026, we were keen to see what the bidders would make of it.

Finished in Sorrento Green, with an estimate of £15,000–£17,000, it certainly looked the part. But would that enthusiasm translate into competitive bidding?

A Sorrento Green Peugeot 205 GTI with an Unusual Interior

The 205 GTI needs little introduction. Launched in the 1980s, Peugeot’s sporting supermini became famous for its lively handling, modest dimensions and engaging driving experience.

For many enthusiasts, it represents a golden age of hot hatchbacks, when cars such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford Fiesta XR2 and Vauxhall Astra GTE were familiar sights on British roads.

This particular example was a 1991 1.9-litre model, finished in the desirable Sorrento Green metallic paintwork.

Its specification included half-leather sports seats, air conditioning and an optional sunroof. Perhaps the most unusual detail was the original green carpeting, which complemented the exterior colour and immediately caught our attention.

The car had recently arrived from Japan and was registered in the UK in July 2026. According to the auction catalogue, it had received an oil and filter service and Waxoyl underseal treatment, while its MOT ran until 24 May 2027.

The vendor described the body and floor pans as corrosion-free, although, as with any classic vehicle, prospective buyers were advised to satisfy themselves regarding its condition.

Slow and Steady Bidding at Anglia Car Auctions

When the Peugeot entered the auction at King’s Lynn, we were watching and filming the proceedings.

Once the internet bids had loaded, bidding opened to the room at £11,200.

What followed was a rather measured contest.

The price advanced in £200 increments, but there were noticeable pauses between bids. Rather than a frantic battle, this was an auction in which prospective buyers appeared to be giving each decision some thought.

With the estimate set at £15,000–£17,000, the bidding still had some ground to cover.

Would the Peugeot reach its guide price? And could an announcement from auctioneer David encourage a few more bids?

Peugeot 205 GTI Auction Result: £14,000

At £13,600, auctioneer David announced that the Peugeot was on sale.

That is always an interesting moment at an auction. It confirms that the reserve has been met and the vehicle will sell, provided the bidding is completed normally.

In our experience, such an announcement can sometimes encourage another bidder to make one final attempt.

And that is exactly what happened here.

Further bids took the price to £14,000, where the hammer finally fell.

Anglia Car Auctions subsequently recorded a result of £15,120 including buyer’s premium.

What Does £14,000 Tell Us About the Peugeot 205 GTI Market?

The result was £1,000 below the lower end of the pre-sale estimate, although the final price paid by the buyer exceeded £15,000 once the premium was included.

It was an interesting outcome for a car with an attractive specification, a fresh UK registration and the added appeal of being a Japanese import.

Of course, a single auction result cannot establish the value of every Peugeot 205 GTI. Condition, originality, mileage, maintenance history and specification can all make a substantial difference.

Nevertheless, this sale offers another useful reference point for enthusiasts following the market for surviving hot hatchbacks.

And it is worth remembering that the 205 GTI’s appeal has never been entirely about money.

For some, it brings back memories of cars they owned in the 1980s and 1990s. Others remember wanting one when they were new, perhaps studying the advertisements or spotting them in the local Peugeot showroom.

Today, younger enthusiasts are discovering why these small French performance cars earned such a loyal following in the first place.

Still One of the Great Hot Hatches?

There is something rather special about seeing a Peugeot 205 GTI survive into its fourth decade.

The compact proportions, distinctive alloy wheels and unmistakable GTI styling are all reminders of an era when relatively simple cars could deliver enormous driving enjoyment.

This Sorrento Green example attracted plenty of our attention, and its thoughtful auction contest made for an enjoyable piece of footage.

Would you have been tempted at £14,000? And if you owned a 205 GTI back in the day, we’d love to hear your memories.

The Peugeot was offered as Lot 626 at Anglia Car Auctions’ 22–23 August 2026 sale. You can view the original auction listing for further details and photographs.
