There is something oddly exciting about finding genuine old Ford parts that have somehow survived untouched for decades.
Not reproduction parts. Not pattern copies in a plain white box. Proper New Old Stock items that have sat on a shelf since the Mk2 Escort and Capri were still everyday sights on British roads.
This particular find popped up on eBay recently courtesy of seller Many Old Items, who appears to have several genuine NOS pieces tucked away, and it immediately transported us back to the golden age of autojumbles, dusty dealership stockrooms and long-forgotten motor factors.
The part itself is a genuine boxed Ford right-hand chrome wing mirror carrying part number 74 EB-017K689-FC, listed for Ford Escort Mk2 and Ford Capri Mk2 applications.
And honestly, it is a lovely thing.
Genuine Ford New Old Stock Parts Just Feel Different
Even people who are not especially interested in concours restorations will understand the appeal here.
The old Ford Service Parts box. The period labels. The untouched chrome. The mounting studs still looking fresh after all these years. It is the sort of thing enthusiasts used to discover at Beaulieu or tucked away behind the counter of a village garage that had not cleared its attic since the early 1980s.
These little details matter when you are restoring a car properly.
Anyone can buy a reproduction mirror, but genuine Ford NOS parts have a fit, finish and feel that is almost impossible to replicate now. They also tell a story. Somewhere along the line, this mirror was ordered by a Ford dealer or motor factor and then simply never used.
Now, decades later, it has resurfaced on eBay.
Ford Escort Mk2 And Capri Mk2 Parts Are Only Getting Harder To Find
It is no secret that Mk2 Escort and Capri values have climbed massively over the last decade, and genuine period-correct parts have followed the same trend.
That is especially true with trim items and exterior fittings.
Mechanical parts can often be rebuilt or upgraded, but original mirrors, lamps, badges and dealer-supplied accessories are getting increasingly difficult to source, particularly still boxed and unused like this.
If you are restoring a Ford Escort Mk2 or Capri Mk2, finds like this are becoming genuinely collectible in their own right.
Many Old Items Has Some Interesting Stock
The seller behind this particular listing, Many Old Items, appears to have various NOS and vintage pieces for sale rather than just this mirror alone, so it is well worth a browse if you enjoy this sort of thing.
That is often how the best discoveries happen. You go looking for one small part and end up disappearing down a rabbit hole of obsolete Ford, BL or Vauxhall stock that has somehow survived untouched for 40 years.
Dangerous for the wallet, admittedly.
