Morris Commercial has revealed its latest pre-production Morris JE at the EE West Show in Cheltenham, providing the clearest indication yet that the long-awaited return of the famous British commercial vehicle brand is edging closer to reality.
For those unfamiliar with the project, the Morris JE is a modern electric van inspired by the iconic Morris J-Type. The original J-Type became a familiar sight on British roads following its launch in 1948, serving everyone from tradespeople and shopkeepers to delivery firms and local businesses.
Now, nearly eight decades later, Morris Commercial hopes to bring that instantly recognisable shape into the electric era.
A Familiar Face For A New Generation
Love it or loathe it, there is no denying the Morris JE stands out.
While most modern vans are designed almost entirely around practicality, the JE has been created with character firmly at the forefront. Its rounded styling, distinctive grille and retro proportions make it look more like a concept vehicle than a typical working van.
That appears to be entirely intentional.
Morris Commercial says the JE is aimed at businesses that want their vehicle to be part of their brand identity rather than simply a tool for moving goods from A to B.
Looking at the latest pre-production example, it’s easy to see why interest has been strong among hospitality businesses, artisan food operators, premium retailers and creative industries.
What Are The Specifications?
Beneath the nostalgic styling sits a thoroughly modern electric platform.
According to Morris Commercial, the JE will feature:
Payload capacity of up to 1,000kg
Gross vehicle weight of 2,500kg
Cargo volume of up to 6.0 cubic metres
Claimed range of up to 300 miles
Rapid charging capability
Lightweight aluminium chassis
Recycled carbon fibre monocoque body construction
Perhaps most interestingly, Morris Commercial claims the JE will become the world’s first commercial vehicle to use a recycled carbon fibre monocoque body.
The company also plans to use the platform as the basis for future pickup, minibus and camper variants.
Moving Towards Production
One of the biggest questions surrounding the Morris JE has always been whether it would actually reach production.
This latest announcement suggests tangible progress is being made.
Morris Commercial says pilot production is now planned for 2027 at its composite manufacturing facility in Milton Keynes, with commercial-scale production scheduled to begin at St Athan in South Wales during 2028.
The company also recently acquired Prodrive Composites capabilities, bringing composite manufacturing expertise and technology in-house.
That move should help strengthen production capability while giving Morris Commercial greater control over one of the JE’s most distinctive engineering features.
More Than 7,000 Expressions Of Interest
While production remains some way off, Morris Commercial says customer interest continues to grow.
The company reports more than 7,000 expressions of interest globally, with enquiries arriving from the UK, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.
That level of interest is encouraging, although expressions of interest are obviously very different from firm orders.
The real test will come once production vehicles begin reaching customers.
A Refreshing Alternative
There is no shortage of electric vans arriving on the market, but very few can claim to have genuine character.
Whether the Morris JE ultimately succeeds or not, it’s refreshing to see a British manufacturer attempting something genuinely different rather than producing another anonymous box on wheels.
The challenge now is converting years of development work and strong early interest into a production vehicle that customers can actually buy.
If Morris Commercial can achieve that, the Morris JE could become one of the most distinctive electric commercial vehicles on sale anywhere in the world.
