How Much Is an Austin Allegro Worth? This 1981 HL Went to Auction

The Austin Allegro might be one of the easiest classic cars in Britain to make fun of, but we’ll happily admit to having a soft spot for them.

And when a smart-looking 1981 Austin Allegro HL appeared at Anglia Car Auctions, we were particularly interested to see what bidders thought it was worth.

This wasn’t a forgotten restoration project dragged blinking into daylight either. It was a usable, well-presented Allegro with 54,746 miles showing, a substantial history file and, according to the auction description, one that “drives brilliantly”.

So, how much is an Austin Allegro like this actually worth today?

A surprisingly appealing Allegro

Finished in a suitably period shade and wearing its wonderfully angular early-1980s styling with pride, this Allegro certainly photographed well.

It’s an HL model powered by the 1275cc engine and equipped with a five-speed gearbox. Inside, the brown interior adds another generous helping of period charm.

The car had been with its latest keeper for nine years and came with an impressive collection of paperwork.

Anglia Car Auctions listed previous MoT certificates stretching all the way back to the car’s first test, together with numerous maintenance receipts.

There was even a detailed handwritten repair record from the latest keeper.

Plenty of recent attention

This wasn’t simply an old Allegro relying on nostalgia to attract bidders.

According to the history supplied with the car, it received four new tyres and a full service in November 2025, while a new clutch had been fitted a few months earlier.

The paperwork also included something we particularly like finding with an old car: the original handbooks and brochures.

There’s even a rustproofing guarantee certificate dating from 1981.

Its V5C recorded six former keepers and the Allegro was first registered on 1 May 1981.

Watch the Austin Allegro auction

We were at Anglia Car Auctions when the Allegro went under the hammer and filmed the bidding.

We won’t spoil the video before you’ve watched it. Have a figure in your head first and see how close you get.

Would you have paid more, less, or were the bidders about right?

The hammer comes down

If you’ve watched the video, you’ll now know where the bidding ended.

The Allegro was offered with no reserve and eventually sold for £2,754 including the buyer’s premium.

That’s an interesting result.

For considerably less than the price of many restoration projects, somebody came away with a running and driving 1980s British classic with plenty of history, relatively modest indicated mileage and a character that is almost impossible to mistake for anything else.

And perhaps that’s where cars such as the Allegro are becoming increasingly interesting.

Are Allegros finally getting the appreciation they deserve?

For decades the Austin Allegro has been an easy punchline whenever Britain’s motor industry of the 1970s and early 1980s is discussed.

But time has a habit of changing how we look at cars.

The ordinary machinery people grew up around disappears, survivors become increasingly noticeable, and suddenly the cars nobody thought to preserve become the ones that trigger the strongest memories.

An Allegro now attracts attention precisely because you hardly ever encounter one in everyday traffic.

Whether £2,754 looks cheap, expensive or exactly right will depend largely on how you feel about Allegros in the first place.

We know which side we’re on.

We’d happily have one.
