Confession time…we had a little bid on this 1979 Austin Maxi when it popped up on eBay, but had no idea it would be this popular!
We did the right thing, though, which was to publish it on our large UK Barn Finds Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) accounts, so it’s no surprise that we were soon outbid! Besides, it’s a great-looking car and that colour is so sought after.
From the seller: “1979 Austin Maxi
Up for sale today is this 1979 Austin Maxi, it comes with keys, V5 Logbook, some paperwork and manuals along with a boot full of spare parts. Clocks show 78,840 miles which we believe is genuine. It has been off the road dry stored as part of a large private collection since 1995 and is in need of general recommissioning/restoration.
A lovely practical classic in the best colour and interior combination. It is of course being a 1979 car exempt from MOT, Tax and ULEZ amongst other low emission zones, the 1750cc engine is plenty capable of keeping up with modern traffic and they’re surprisingly economical, parts are readily available and good value too.
With a jump it starts, runs and drives, the engine sounds good with no nasty noises, smoke or rattles etc, clutch works as it should as does the gearbox, steering feels tight and precise too, suspension will want servicing, brakes work but front calipers are binding, handbrake is good. Tyres are old and will need replacing. Obviously due to time standing it will need a complete check over and full service etc.”
