If you’ve ever fancied crossing America in a classic Airstream but don’t quite fancy towing a caravan, this could be the next best thing.
One of the most unusual lots in Historics Auctioneers’ Summer Serenade sale on 18th July is this wonderfully preserved 1975 Airstream Argosy 20′ motorhome. Better still, we’re told it’s one of only three believed to be in the UK.
Introduced in 1974, the Argosy marked Airstream’s first venture into self-propelled motorhomes. Rather than the polished aluminium finish that made the company’s caravans world famous, the Argosy featured a painted aluminium body, giving buyers a more affordable alternative while retaining Airstream’s distinctive aircraft-inspired construction.
This particular example is built on a Chevrolet chassis and powered by the dependable 350 cubic-inch (5.7-litre) V8 coupled to an automatic gearbox. It also benefits from a recently fitted Gear Vendors overdrive unit, making long-distance touring even more relaxed.
Sympathetically Restored Interior
One glance inside explains why these motorhomes have such a loyal following.
The restored interior retains plenty of 1970s character, with period cabinetry, retro fabrics and a wonderfully inviting lounge area, while still offering a comfortable space for touring holidays or classic vehicle events.
Unlike many classic motorhomes that have been modernised beyond recognition, this Argosy appears to strike an appealing balance between originality and usability.
Rare Opportunity
Historics states the motorhome was first registered in the UK in 2010 and has been enjoyed by its current owner since 2020.
With an odometer reading of 27,500 miles, the Argosy is described as a highly usable classic that’s equally suited to rallies, touring adventures or simply joining a significant private collection.
As interest in classic American RVs continues to grow, opportunities like this don’t appear very often, particularly when the auction house believes there are only three examples in the country.
Historics Auctioneers has guided the Argosy at £13,000-£20,000 ahead of its sale at Windsorview Lakes on 18th July.
