BMW And LEGO Celebrate 40 Years Of The BMW M3 E30

Few performance cars have achieved true legend status quite like the BMW M3 E30.

Originally created to homologate BMW’s touring car racer for Group A competition, the box-arched E30 M3 quickly became one of the most recognisable performance cars of the 1980s — and now, 40 years after its launch, BMW and LEGO are celebrating the icon in a rather unusual way.

The BMW Group and LEGO Group have announced a special-edition LEGO® Speed Champions BMW M3 E30 set, complete with a unique co-designed motorsport-inspired livery applied not only to the miniature LEGO model, but also to a full-size real-world BMW M3 E30 show car.

And honestly, it looks brilliant.

A LEGO BMW M3 E30 With A Difference

This is not simply another small-scale model.

For the first time, BMW and LEGO designers worked together to create an entirely bespoke livery for both the real car and the LEGO version, blending classic BMW M Motorsport inspiration with modern geometric styling.

The result is something that somehow feels both retro and futuristic at the same time.

The special-edition LEGO® Speed Champions BMW M3 E30 kit contains 358 pieces and recreates many of the original car’s signature details, including the kidney grille, rear spoiler and four-headlamp front end that made the first-generation M3 instantly recognisable.

There is even a BMW M-themed minifigure included in the box.

Why The BMW M3 E30 Still Matters

The BMW M3 E30 has become one of those rare cars that appeals to almost everybody.

Motorsport fans love it because of its touring car dominance. Collectors love it because values exploded years ago. And enthusiasts simply love the way it looks.

Even people with no real interest in classic cars usually know exactly what an E30 M3 is.

BMW originally developed the car in the mid-1980s as a homologation special, meaning road-going versions had to be produced so the race car could compete. The result was wider arches, sharper handling and one of the most iconic silhouettes of the decade.

Today, genuine E30 M3s sit firmly in dream-car territory for many enthusiasts, with pristine examples now commanding huge money worldwide.

LEGO Speed Champions Continues To Grow

The LEGO® Speed Champions range has quietly become hugely popular among both car enthusiasts and collectors.

Unlike traditional model kits, the appeal stretches across generations. Kids enjoy building and racing them, while adults increasingly collect them as display pieces — especially when iconic cars like the BMW M3 E30 are involved.

And frankly, this collaboration feels like a perfect fit.

The original M3 already has slightly toy-like proportions thanks to its chunky arches and upright styling, which somehow translates beautifully into LEGO form.

BMW M3 E30 LEGO Set Available From August 2026

The LEGO® Speed Champions BMW M3 E30 is available to pre-order now and officially launches on 1st August 2026.

The set will be available through LEGO stores, LEGO.com, BMW dealers and BMW’s lifestyle website, priced at €27.99 RRP.

BMW will also release a full-size version of the BMW M-themed LEGO minifigure T-shirt from August 2026, allowing fans to match their tiny plastic racing driver.

To mark the launch, BMW plans a public event in Berlin featuring the full-size BMW M3 E30 show car wearing the co-created livery.

And honestly, seeing a genuine E30 M3 styled like a LEGO Speed Champions model might end up being one of the coolest automotive collaborations we have seen in years.
