1990 Rover Mini Cooper RSP Project Appears On eBay

The original Rover Mini Cooper RSP models have quietly become one of the most desirable modern-classic Minis on the market — and this 1990 example has now surfaced on eBay looking for a new home.

Finished in British Racing Green with a white roof and red interior, the Mini certainly looks the part. It also appears to retain plenty of the features buyers want to see on an early RSP car, including the correct-style trim and 1275cc engine.

According to the seller, the Mini was purchased in Edinburgh before being driven all the way back to the Midlands without issue — always a decent sign with any old Mini. Since then it has been used sparingly before going into dry storage inside an insulated container.

What Is A Rover Mini Cooper RSP?

The Rover Mini Cooper RSP — short for Rover Special Products — marked the return of the Mini Cooper name in 1990 after years away from UK showrooms.

Built in relatively small numbers initially, these early RSP cars helped kick-start the huge Mini revival of the 1990s and are now seen by many enthusiasts as one of the most collectible versions of the later classic Mini.

The formula was simple but effective: a lively 1275cc engine, wider arches, Minilite-style wheels and just enough Cooper badging to make ordinary Minis suddenly feel properly sporty again.

Today, genuine early RSP cars are increasingly sought-after — especially unmodified examples.

The Reality Beneath The Shine

As with most classic Minis, the photographs tell a familiar story once you start looking closely.

The seller openly admits there is corrosion and bubbling in “all the usual Mini spots,” while the leaking heater matrix has already ruined the carpets. There are also a few smaller jobs required, including a faulty fuel sender and non-working stereo.

Still, honesty in old-car listings is never a bad thing.

Importantly, the seller says the Mini starts, runs and drives well, which immediately makes it more appealing than many half-finished Mini projects currently changing hands online.

The engine bay itself actually looks remarkably tidy for a car being sold as a recommissioning project, and the overall appearance suggests a Mini that has been used and enjoyed rather than endlessly dismantled.

Minis Still Have Huge Buyer Appeal

We love buying Minis at UK Barn Finds because demand for usable projects remains incredibly strong.

Good honest cars — even those needing cosmetic work — rarely stay around for long, especially when they are early Cooper models with a bit of history behind them.

Values have risen massively over the last decade, but buyers still seem willing to take on restoration work if the fundamentals are right.

This one probably sits somewhere between usable classic and rolling restoration, but somebody will almost certainly see the potential.

And realistically, that is the enduring magic of the Mini.

Even when they are imperfect, people still want them.
