Most ‘barn finds’ we feature do have at least two wheels. Okay, so they may not be mobile when discovered, but they do generally resemble some kind of vehicle. This time, however, we’ve gone a bit ‘off piste’….but how could we NOT feature a Rolls Royce V12 Meteor 27 litre Tank Engine?!!
The story goes that this particular V12 was overhauled by Rolls Royce, crated up, returned to the MOD and then never used.
Fans of military vehicles will recognise the paint used, that’s for sure.
According to the listing, the Meteor was in production from 1943 to 1964 and was used in Cromwell, Comet, Centurion, Tortoise and Conqueror tanks. It’s a petrol engine, producing 600BHP and we’d hate to guess at how much torque!
It’s doubtful that you’ll see an unused V12 Meteor engine for sale again for a while. There are bids already…we wonder if the likes of Top Gear, or Clarkson et al’s new show on Amazon, have spotted it and fancy doing something crazy?
Apparently, this engine can be used in a Bentley Special or a Rolls Royce Special. What we’d like to know, though, is what would YOU like to drop it into?!!
