A 1983 Volkswagen Golf GTI has now gone under the hammer — and the result landed right on the money.
We featured this Mk1 GTI ahead of the Cheffins sale, where it generated plenty of discussion. With its mix of originality, recommissioning needs and honest presentation, it was always going to be one that divided opinion.
As a last-of-the-line Mk1 GTI, this example ticked a lot of the right boxes on paper.
Finished in Mars Red with black and red cloth trim, it also featured the desirable 1.8-litre DX engine, “golf ball” gear knob and Tarantula alloy wheels — all details that enthusiasts look for.
Offered from 18 years of ownership, it also had a strong backstory, even if it wasn’t a concours-level example.
Guided at £8,000–£10,000, this was pitched at a level that drew attention.
Some felt it might struggle depending on condition, while others saw it as a solid, usable car with potential.
When the bidding got underway, it settled at £10,000 (plus fees) — right at the top end of the estimate.

Results like this often say more than record-breaking sales.
This wasn’t a car that ran away, but it didn’t fall short either — landing exactly where many would expect for a usable Mk1 GTI with a few question marks.
