One-Owner Triumph Acclaim Hidden Away Since 1985

Unrestored 1980s cars with genuine one-owner history are becoming incredibly difficult to find now, especially examples that have effectively disappeared from public view for decades.

This 1982 Triumph Acclaim CD Triomatic looks to be one of those cars.

Stored away after just 19,714 miles and untouched since the mid-1980s, the seller believes it could well be the lowest-mileage Acclaim CD left in existence.

Parked Up In 1985

Known affectionately as “Teddy the Triumph”, this Acclaim was first registered in March 1982 after being supplied new by Peck and Packer Austin Rover in March, Cambridgeshire.

According to the seller, the car was bought new by Mr John Sharp for his wife, who then used it locally for only a few years before retiring it from the road in 1985.

The reason was surprisingly simple.

Her husband apparently bought her a brand-new Maestro Mayfair, leaving the Acclaim parked away in an open-fronted barn where it remained hidden until 2025.

Remarkably, that means the car never even made it to its first MOT test.

Completely Original Throughout

The listing claims the Triumph remains totally untouched and original, right down to its factory-fitted tyres dating from 1981, which are now flat but still fitted to the car.

Photos suggest the seller may not be exaggerating.

The boot area looks astonishingly clean, the beige velour-style interior appears beautifully preserved and even the dashboard and switchgear seem to have survived without the usual cracking or fading these cars often suffered from.

Under the bonnet, everything still looks factory-correct and refreshingly unmodified.

Triumph’s Forgotten Final Chapter

The Triumph Acclaim occupies an interesting place in British motoring history.

Developed alongside Honda and based heavily on the Honda Ballade, it became the final production Triumph ever built and effectively marked the end of the famous Triumph brand.

For years they were overlooked entirely, but surviving Acclaims are now thin on the ground, particularly early high-specification CD models like this automatic example.

Needs Recommissioning, Not Restoration

The seller is very clear that the car will need full recommissioning before returning to the road.

Jobs mentioned include cambelt replacement, fluid changes, brake work and general mechanical checks after four decades of storage.

There is also some surface corrosion visible on one of the doors where the car faced the elements inside the barn.

Even so, this looks far more like a preservation-grade survivor than a restoration project.

Importantly, the seller says it did start and drive when loaded onto a trailer, suggesting the car has not completely seized into immobility despite its long hibernation.

One Owner From New

Included in the sale are the original purchase invoice, documentation, handbooks and V5 paperwork showing just one owner from new.

That sort of provenance is becoming increasingly valuable as genuinely untouched survivors disappear from the market.

Whether restored lightly or preserved exactly as it sits, this Acclaim feels like a fascinating snapshot of early-1980s British motoring.
