A beautifully preserved 1975 Hillman Hunter G Luxe stunned bidders at Anglia Car Auctions when it sold for more than double its guide price.
Estimated at just £4,000 to £5,000, the maroon saloon eventually changed hands for an impressive £10,368 including buyer’s premium, highlighting just how strong demand can be for exceptionally original family classics.
The auction listing described the Hunter as showing just 34,371 miles, presented in remarkably well-preserved condition both inside and out. Unlike many surviving Hunters that have required extensive restoration, this example impressed with its originality and careful long-term ownership.
The paperwork told an equally attractive story.
There have been only three registered keepers since the car was first registered on 1st October 1975. Prior to the current owner acquiring it in 2019, the Hunter had reportedly remained with a husband and wife from 1990 onwards.
The history file was equally comprehensive, including previous and current V5Cs, 26 MoT certificates spanning 1985 to 2027, plus a substantial collection of invoices and receipts dating back to 1987.
According to the vendor, the car had also recently been fully serviced and fitted with four new tyres.
Adding to its appeal was an advisory-free MoT valid until 16th April 2027.
Finding a largely original 1970s family saloon with such an extensive history, long ownership and excellent presentation is becoming increasingly difficult, and bidders clearly recognised that when the auctioneer opened the bidding.
Hillman Hunters don’t often make headlines, but sales like this show that originality and provenance can outweigh outright performance or rarity.
Collectors increasingly appreciate honest, well-preserved examples of everyday British classics, especially those that haven’t been heavily modified or repeatedly restored over the decades.
While few would have predicted this final result from the published estimate, the spirited bidding demonstrated exactly what can happen when several determined buyers all want the same car.
