Some cars spend decades trying to shake off an unfair reputation. The Austin Allegro might just be the king of them all.
This 1975 Austin Allegro 1500 Special crossed the block at Anglia Car Auctions during its April 2026 classic car sale, proving once again that the market for once-overlooked British classics is alive and well.
For years, the Allegro was the punchline to countless jokes. Built during a difficult period for British Leyland, it became an easy target for motoring journalists and comedians alike.
Fast forward to today and things are starting to look very different.
Many Allegros have long since disappeared, while surviving examples are attracting a growing following among enthusiasts who appreciate them for exactly what they are: a distinctive piece of 1970s British motoring history.
According to Anglia Car Auctions, this Allegro was being sold by a club member who owns seven other examples.
Described as a rare 1500 Special and well known to Allegro Club International, it wasn’t simply a forgotten car dragged out of storage and sent straight to auction.
The vendor had reportedly carried out extensive recommissioning work since acquiring it in 2024.
That work included replacement fuel system components, a major brake overhaul, carburettor and distributor work, radiator and heater system attention, lighting repairs and various other jobs aimed at getting the car back into usable condition.
The owner advised that the suspension spheres would still require re-gassing and that the front chin strap needed attaching, but much of the difficult work had already been tackled.
Cars offered without reserve often attract attention because bidders know there is a genuine opportunity to buy.
That was certainly the case here.
The Allegro generated lively bidding in the auction hall, with enthusiasts clearly seeing something worth competing for.
Whether that was the rarity of the 1500 Special model, the work already completed, or simply nostalgia for a car that’s becoming increasingly uncommon is open to debate.
When the hammer finally fell and the buyer’s premium was added, the final result came to £1,860.
For a running, recommissioned and enthusiast-owned Allegro, plenty of people will argue that’s still affordable entry into classic car ownership.
Others will no doubt be surprised that an Allegro can make that sort of money at all.
Either way, it shows just how much attitudes towards these once-maligned British classics have changed.
