A 45-year barn find Skoda Octavia estate is something else entirely.
Heading to Cheffins’ next Vintage Sale on 18th July is this remarkably original-looking 1970 Skoda Octavia estate, a car that has reportedly spent the last four and a half decades tucked away inside a barn.
For many enthusiasts, Skoda’s modern reputation often overshadows the company’s much earlier history. Long before the Volkswagen era, Skoda was producing practical family cars that rarely survived in significant numbers in the UK. That makes discoveries like this particularly interesting.
Hidden Away Since The 1970s
According to the information supplied with the vehicle, this right-hand-drive Octavia estate was laid up around 45 years ago and has remained stored ever since.
The photographs suggest an unusually complete and honest survivor. Dust covers every surface, but the body appears largely intact, the trim remains present and the interior has escaped the heavy deterioration so often seen in long-forgotten storage finds.
The dashboard, steering wheel and seating all appear remarkably original, giving a fascinating glimpse into everyday Eastern European motoring from more than half a century ago.
An Increasingly Rare Sight
Classic Skodas are still something of a novelty at British shows and events, particularly earlier models such as the Octavia.
Finding a right-hand-drive example is uncommon enough. Finding one that has effectively disappeared from public view for decades is another matter entirely.
The estate body style only adds to its appeal. While sports cars and exotic machinery often dominate headlines, practical family cars frequently generate the most nostalgia because they represent everyday motoring history.
What Happens Next?
As with any vehicle emerging from decades of storage, recommissioning will be a significant undertaking.
However, the appeal here is not simply about returning a car to the road. It is about preserving a fascinating piece of motoring history that few people will ever encounter.
Whether it becomes a sympathetic recommissioning project or a full restoration, this Skoda looks like the sort of discovery enthusiasts love to see rescued and enjoyed once again.
