BUYING A CLASSIC CAR AT AUCTION
General Notes
Different auction houses will run their auctions their own way. There is no set formula, although many classic car auctions will appear similar. Always take a moment to check the Terms & Conditions (T&Cs), especially when it comes to registration, fees, payment terms and collection of vehicles BEFORE bidding.
Registration
You’ll need to register in advance to bid at an auction. This may be an online process, but you should also be able to register on the day for ‘in person’ auctions. Some auction houses will ask for a refundable deposit before they give you a bidding number. This is to deter time-wasters.
Fees
Before bidding, familiarise yourself with the fee structure. It is normal to pay a premium on the price you bid and this can vary massively between different sales.
Bidding
Your bid is legally binding. Don’t bid if you don’t intend to pay. If you aren’t able to bid online or in person for any reason, see if the auction house caters for telephone bids or commission bids. A commission bid is when you lodge your ‘maximum bid’ with the auction house before the sale and they, effectively, bid for you up to that maximum.
Paying
Pay within the time stipulated in the T&Cs. Most auction houses won’t pay the vendor until they’ve received your payment.
Collection
Collect your vehicle as per the auction instructions. It is important to be aware of deadlines, especially for auctions that take place at events and other venues. Many of these have to clear the site very quickly!
