1989 Toyota Supra A70 Turbo Manual Sells Strongly at Anglia Car Auctions

Some auction results leave everyone nodding in agreement.

Others have enthusiasts asking whether they should have bought one years ago.

This 1989 Toyota Supra A70 3.0 Turbo Manual certainly fell into the second category, attracting strong bidding at Anglia Car Auctions before selling for £13,392 including buyer’s premium.

Offered without reserve, the increasingly sought-after Japanese performance coupe proved that demand for well-preserved analogue sports cars remains as strong as ever.

A desirable manual turbo Supra

Not every A70 Supra is created equal.

This example was powered by Toyota’s range-topping 3.0-litre 7M-GTE turbocharged straight-six, paired with the increasingly rare manual gearbox combination that many enthusiasts actively seek today.

Finished in black with a grey leather interior, the car had covered 95,526 miles and came with an advisory-free MoT valid until 6th August 2026.

As values of 1980s and 1990s Japanese performance cars continue to climb, original manual examples such as this are becoming much harder to find.

Nearly 35 years with one family

Perhaps the most impressive part of the car’s history wasn’t its specification, but its ownership.

The Supra was purchased by the vendor’s wife from its original owner in 1990 and remained with the family ever since. Following her passing, ownership was transferred to the vendor, resulting in just two former keepers being shown on the V5C.

Long-term ownership stories like this are becoming increasingly uncommon and often give buyers additional confidence when bidding.

Well maintained throughout its life

The history file backed up the ownership record.

Included were the original handbook pack, a service book containing eight service stamps up to 49,000 miles in 1992, together with a substantial collection of maintenance invoices showing continued servicing over the following decades.

One particularly reassuring entry recorded a cambelt replacement in 2022, less than 200 miles before the sale.

Previous MoT certificates were also included, painting a picture of a cherished car that had been regularly maintained rather than simply stored away.

Japanese classics continue to gather momentum

The Toyota Supra name carries enormous weight today, helped by decades of motorsport success, popular culture and an ever-growing enthusiast following.

While later Mk. IV Supras often grab the headlines, earlier A70 models have quietly developed a loyal fanbase of their own thanks to their handsome styling, robust engineering and engaging driving experience.

Results like this suggest buyers are increasingly recognising their significance.
