1963 MGB And 1967 Morris Minor Recovered After Decades Off The Road

When a website lead landed in our inbox recently, we had a feeling it might be worth investigating.

What we didn’t know at the time was that it would lead to the recovery of two classics that appear to have been off the road for decades – a 1963 MGB Roadster and a 1967 Morris Minor.

We were told the cars had been laid up since the mid-1990s. However, a quick check of the DVLA records suggests the MGB’s road tax expired in 1983, while the Morris Minor’s expired in 1989.

Either way, both cars had been sitting for a very long time.

Two Cars, Two Very Different Recoveries

The MGB and Morris Minor may have arrived together, but that’s where the similarities ended.

The MGB had spent its years tucked away inside a garage. While it wasn’t going to roll freely onto a trailer, only the front wheels were seized and the recovery proved relatively straightforward.

Our trusted transport partner, Joe Green Transportation & Recovery, was able to winch it onto the truck without too much fuss. He even managed to fold the soft-top and fit the hard top that came with the car before setting off.

Compared to what was waiting elsewhere on the property, it was almost the easy part of the day.

The Morris Minor Was Another Story

We had a feeling the Morris Minor might prove more challenging.

That’s exactly why we sent Joe.

The Minor had spent decades parked beneath a tree, deep within the garden. Unfortunately for Joe, the tree hadn’t stopped growing while the car sat there.

By the time recovery day arrived, getting a truck anywhere near the Morris simply wasn’t possible.

Thankfully Joe had anticipated the problem and arrived equipped with additional lengths of strapping, snatch blocks and plenty of patience.

What followed was one of the most unusual recoveries we’ve seen for quite some time.

The winch line stretched across the garden, around obstacles and back towards the truck as the Minor slowly began moving for the first time in decades.

The further you step back from the photos, the more ridiculous the setup appears.

And yet it worked perfectly.

Why We Use Specialists

Recoveries like this are a good reminder that not every vehicle collection is straightforward.

Most people see the finished photos on social media and assume the difficult part is buying the vehicle.

Often, it’s getting it out.

Over the years we’ve recovered cars from garages, barns, lock-ups, workshops, industrial units and all manner of awkward locations. Every now and then though, something comes along that requires a little extra ingenuity.

This was one of those days.

Watch The Recovery

The photos tell part of the story, but the video tells the rest.

We’ve uploaded a short clip showing just how far the winch line had to travel before the Morris Minor finally emerged from beneath the trees.

Watch it here:

What Happens Next?

For now, we’ve made no firm decisions regarding either vehicle.

The MGB appears to be the more straightforward project of the two, while the Morris Minor has clearly had a tougher life outdoors.

Whatever their futures hold, both cars have finally left their resting places after decades of inactivity and are now safely back with us.
