Buying Car Parts Online Just Got Less Risky as eBay Launches Free Returns

Whether you’re restoring a barn find, rebuilding a project car or simply trying to keep an ageing daily driver on the road, there’s a good chance you’ve ordered a part online that turned out not to be quite right.

It happens to all of us. The listing looks correct, the measurements seem to match, and the compatibility checker says you’re good to go. Then the parcel arrives and something isn’t right. Suddenly you’re dealing with return postage costs, forms and the hassle of sending it all back.

That’s why a new initiative from eBay could be welcome news for enthusiasts across the UK.

eBay Introduces Easy and Free Returns

eBay has announced the launch of Easy and Free Returns on eligible new vehicle parts and accessories sold through its marketplace.

Available on qualifying items priced above £10, the scheme allows buyers to return products free of charge within 30 days of delivery. The rollout is already underway and is expected to be fully implemented across all eligible listings by July.

For anyone who regularly buys parts online, whether that’s service items, trim pieces, performance upgrades or hard-to-find restoration components, it removes one of the biggest concerns associated with ordering from home.

Most Motorists Want Free Returns

The launch follows new research commissioned by eBay which suggests returns policies have a significant impact on purchasing decisions.

According to the survey, 70 per cent of British motorists say they are more likely to buy from an online retailer when simple and free returns are available.

Half of those questioned admitted they had previously chosen one retailer over another specifically because free returns were offered.

Meanwhile, among motorists who had returned an item during the past year, more than half said paying return postage was their biggest frustration. Complicated return procedures ranked closely behind.

Good News for Project Car Owners

For many UK Barn Finds readers, buying parts online has become part of everyday life.

Whether it’s sourcing components for a long-forgotten restoration, tracking down parts for a rare classic or simply finding the best deal on routine maintenance items, online marketplaces have transformed the way enthusiasts keep their vehicles on the road.

While tools such as eBay’s My Garage and Assured Fit system have helped reduce ordering mistakes, there will always be occasions when a part isn’t suitable or plans change mid-project.

According to eBay’s research, nearly a third of returns happen because an item is no longer suitable for the buyer’s needs, while almost one in five are the result of people simply changing their minds.

Whether you’re searching for service items, restoration parts, trim pieces, workshop equipment or hard-to-find components, it’s one of the largest automotive parts marketplaces in the UK and a resource many enthusiasts use regularly.

Removing Some of the Risk

Abir Tewari, UK Director of Commercial Operations at eBay UK, said:

“Simple, convenient returns play an important role in giving motorists confidence when shopping online. Easy and Free Returns helps remove friction from the buying experience while complementing tools like My Garage and eBay Assured Fit, which help customers find the right part first time.”

For enthusiasts, that’s probably the key takeaway.

Ordering parts online will never be completely risk-free, especially when dealing with older vehicles, modified cars and restoration projects. However, the ability to return eligible items without additional cost should make buying parts online a little less stressful.

And if it means fewer expensive mistakes during a restoration, that’s something most project car owners can get behind.
