Off The Road Since 1972: We’ve Just Rescued This 1962 TVR Grantura Mk2A

A 1962 TVR Grantura Mk2A that’s been off the road since 1972 doesn’t come along every day.

In fact, it’s exactly the sort of discovery that reminds us why we spend so much time chasing forgotten vehicles across the country.

We collected this remarkable Grantura today and, rather than risk damaging it by taking it back to base first, made the decision to transport it straight to Anglia Car Auctions, where it will eventually be offered for sale.

Known affectionately as “Marty” by its previous owners thanks to its MRT registration number, this little TVR has spent more than half a century out of use.

And it shows.

The car is very much a full restoration project. The body has seen better days, the paint is heavily deteriorated, much of the car has been dismantled over the years and there is an enormous amount of work ahead for whoever takes it on.

Yet underneath all that is one of Britain’s most important early sports car designs.

A Lightweight British Sports Car

TVR was still a relatively young company when the Grantura arrived in the late 1950s. Built around a lightweight tubular chassis and clothed in a distinctive fibreglass body, the Grantura offered impressive performance without the weight of a conventional steel-bodied sports car.

The Mk2A arrived during the early 1960s and continued TVR’s philosophy of using proven mechanical components from other manufacturers. This particular example is fitted with the desirable MGA engine, a popular choice among enthusiasts thanks to its strong parts support and competition pedigree.

Even when new, Granturas were never common cars. Many were raced, modified or simply worn out over the years, making surviving examples increasingly scarce today.

More Race Car Than Restoration?

Looking at Marty today, it’s difficult to imagine a straightforward restoration.

The scale of the work required means many enthusiasts will probably view it as the ideal basis for a historic race or competition car rather than a concours restoration project.

And honestly, that’s not a bad thing.

These cars earned their reputation through competition, and it wouldn’t surprise us at all if this Grantura eventually found its way back onto a circuit somewhere.

Who knows? Perhaps one day we’ll see Marty charging around Goodwood once again, doing exactly what a lightweight British sports car was built to do.

Straight To Auction

Because of the condition of the car, we decided not to take it back home first. Every movement carries a risk when dealing with a vehicle that’s been dismantled and sitting for decades, so the safest option was to deliver it directly to Anglia Car Auctions.

If you’ve been looking for a serious restoration challenge, a historic motorsport project or simply a rare early TVR to save, keep an eye on upcoming Anglia Car Auctions catalogues.

Watch The Video

We’ve also uploaded a short walkaround video showing Marty exactly as it arrived at Anglia Car Auctions. There’s no dramatic recommission attempt or workshop inspection here – just a first look at a TVR Grantura Mk2A that has spent more than five decades off the road. The footage gives a closer look at the car’s condition, the remarkable state of the bodywork and just how ambitious a project this rare early TVR has become.

Have Something Hidden Away?

Cars like Marty are exactly why we do what we do.

Whether it’s a complete restoration project, a garage find that’s been parked for decades, a dismantled classic that’s lost its way, or simply something unusual that deserves a second chance, we’d love to hear about it.

We buy classic cars, motorcycles, collections and unfinished projects throughout the UK.

If you’ve got something tucked away in a garage, barn, workshop or lock-up, get in touch with us. Even if it hasn’t moved for years, there’s every chance we’ll be interested.
