Rare Mk2 Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia-Style Cruiser With Rebuilt Engine And Period Upgrades

The Mk2 Ford Granada has quietly become one of those cars that stops people in their tracks at shows, fuel stations and auctions alike. Once a familiar sight on British roads, surviving examples are now getting thinner on the ground, especially usable V6 cars with the right stance and period feel.

This particular 2.8-litre example recently caught our eye on eBay, finished in unmistakably late-1970s gold with a rebuilt V6 and a handful of sensible upgrades already carried out.

A Proper Old-School Ford Cruiser

The seller describes the Granada as being in “very good condition overall” with solid underneath condition, an excellent interior and presentable bodywork. There are reportedly a couple of rust areas beginning to show around the nearside front wing and below the rear screen, but nothing unusual for a car of this era.

What really makes this one interesting is the mechanical work underneath the bonnet.

The 2.8-litre V6 has apparently been reconditioned, with gas-flowed unleaded heads fitted last year. It has also been upgraded with MSD electronic ignition, iridium plugs, high-performance leads and silicone hoses. Those sorts of upgrades tend to suggest an owner who actually used and maintained the car properly rather than simply polishing it for shows.

The Mk2 Granada’s Growing Following

Ford’s Mk2 Granada arrived in 1977 and quickly became one of Britain’s best-known executive cars. Whether in base-spec taxi form or fully loaded Ghia trim, they became a familiar sight everywhere from motorway outside lanes to television police dramas.

Today, they appeal for exactly the same reasons. They are comfortable, simple to work on, full of character and still surprisingly usable modern traffic classics.

The V6 cars, especially 2.8 models, are particularly sought after thanks to their smooth power delivery and unmistakable soundtrack. Finding one that has not dissolved, been heavily modified beyond recognition or turned into a banger racer is becoming increasingly difficult.

Period Modifications That Suit The Car

We quite like the look of this one. The black wheels, subtle stance and tidy engine bay upgrades give it a mild street-machine vibe without ruining the overall character of the car.

Importantly, it still looks like a Granada rather than a caricature of one.

The seller also notes that it has current MOT despite now qualifying for MOT and road tax exemption, along with DAB, CD and Bluetooth for more usable long-distance cruising.
